Ghulam Nabi

Weaving since 1974

His loom sits in a low room off a courtyard, and the rhythm of it has not changed in five decades. A cushion cover takes eleven days: four to warp, six to weave, one for the sozni needle to finish the border.

Shameema Bano

Twenty-two harvests

The crocus opens for barely seventeen days each autumn. She picks before sunrise while the flowers are shut, then separates the three crimson stigmas by hand at the kitchen table with her daughters.

Bashir Ahmad

Third-generation apiarist

Each June he carries his hives up to the wildflower meadows and brings them down in September. The honey is never heated and never filtered, so it sets soft and cloudy in the jar — as it should.

The Wani family

Orchard planted 1938

Their Kagzi trees are older than the house. Nothing is machine-cracked; the shells are so thin that a squeeze of the hand is enough, which is exactly why the halves come out whole.
